Soft water, which has a low mineral content, is often touted as a healthier and more desirable option than hard water. However, there is a common misconception that soft water can affect the pH balance of water, leading to potential health hazards.
What is pH Balance and Why Is It Important?
Although you may be familiar with the term pH, it refers to soil and blood. However, water can also have varying levels of pH. The pH of your water indicates how acidic or alkaline it is. It refers to the number of electrically charged particles present in your water. The pH scale is 0-14. Acidic water has a pH of 7 or less, neutral water pH of 7-8, and alkaline water pH of 8 or higher.
The pH of your drinking water is important. However, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), doesn’t monitor it. They consider it an aesthetic quality. The EPA recommends that your water pH is between 6.5 and 8.5.
The pH Balance of Soft and Hard Water
Soft water is usually between the ranges of 6-7 and 7-8, while hard water tends to be between the two. The reason is that hard water has a lower pH than soft water. This happens because minerals in hard water can reduce the acidity of the water. The EPA recommends that homeowners remove hard water minerals and lower the pH to keep their water within the recommended range. This will still provide the homeowner with a host of benefits, such as cleaner showers, a better quality dishwasher, less mineral buildup in the pipes, fresher laundry, and better-tasting water.
